This Quilt I lie beneath this tattered quilt Five generations old Hand-pieced, hand-stitched, It needs repair, Its hues no longer bold I close my eyes and see the hands That sewed this quilt so well Those wrinkled, aged, And loving hands Of which these stitches tell Old dresses, skirts and flour sacks, Kaleidoscopic whirl, HIstory stitched With warming love From garb of little girls I study it and see the scars That Life has left upon it; Wear and tear From many years, A history to covet With threads worn weak and torn apart, Some pieces became lost The stress and strain Of every day Sometimes demand a cost Other portions, worn right through, Thin ghosts of what they were And if still there At all, so frail, Once bold, now just a blur This quilt, more than a hand-me-down Or heirloom piece to me; In thread and block, Each missing piece, I see my family -Timothy Bryce Blanton
