Sandra Johnston George, affectionately known as “Sweetmama”, of Kosciusko, passed away April 25, 2023, at Beehive Homes of Carthage after a lengthy illness. She was 85.
Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm Thursday, April 27, 2023, and from 10:00 am until 11:00 am Friday, April 28, 2023, at Crestview Church in Kosciusko. Funeral Services will follow Friday at 11:00 am at Crestview Church with interment in Parkway Cemetery. Rev. Jerry Meggs will officiate the services. Jordan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Kosciusko in 1937 to Frank and Gertrude Power Johnston, Sandra graduated from Kosciusko High School and furthered her education at Holmes Junior College.
In 1995, she retired from Mississippi Department of Human Services, after a long, rewarding career of twenty-three years as an eligibility worker. Her entire life was devoted to helping those in her community and beyond have equal opportunities. Forming relationships with people was a priority in her line of work and personal life.
Following retirement, she entered the workforce as a restaurant manager, ultimately restaurant owner, and bank teller.
While devoted to First Presbyterian Church-Kosciusko, she enjoyed worshiping at Crestview Church with her family. In later years, when unable to physically attend church, she loved watching her grandson, Rev Anthony George, on television.
She is survived by her daughter Julie Guess of Kosciusko, daughter-in-law Vickie George of Kosciusko, grandchildren Anthony George of Atlanta, GA, Sonja (Sean) Martin of Ponte Verde Beach, FL, Eric (Julie) George of Madison, Mollye (Jeremy) Moudy of Kosciusko, Leslie (Dallas) Culver of Hernando, ten great-grandchildren, brother Henry “Hank” (Trina) Johnston of McKinney, TX, and a host of nephews and nieces.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Fred A. George Sr., son Freddie George, and brother Kenneth Johnston.
Pallbearers are Tim Deason, Craig Evans, Robert Hawkins, James Johnston, Rusty McDaniel, and Cameron Vernier.
Honorary pallbearer is Joe Munn.
The family would like to extend special appreciation to BeeHive Homes of Carthage, AccentCare Hospice, Evelyn Pender, Bernard and Sarah Boone, Jimmy Mullen, and Craig Evans, who all were dear to her, especially during her final years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Crestview Church Building Fund.
