Joe Guyton Collins

Dr. Joe Guyton Collins went to be with the Lord September 17, 2017 at St. Dominic Hospital, Jackson, Mississippi. He was born October 25, 1936 to Elizabeth Morgan and Clifton Wendall Collins in Ethel, MS. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Madison where he served as a men's Sunday School teacher for many years and a faithful leader of several men's prayer groups. He assisted in founding and volunteered at Caring Hands. He had a heart for missions and traveled for many years to Romania where he served at an orphanage, providing dental work for the children. Also, the Francis Asbury Society, an evangelical ministry, in Wilmore, Kentucky was very dear to him. He graduated Durant High School, Durant, Mississippi. He was a graduate of Mississippi College, Clinton, Mississippi with a major in Math and Science. He was a coach and teacher at Indianola High School, Indianola, Mississippi, and Tunica High School, Tunica, Mississippi. He continued his education at UT Dental School, Memphis, Tennessee. He practiced general dentistry 5 years in Grenada, Mississippi. He received his specialty degree in Endodontics at University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California. He practiced dentistry for a total of 50 years. He was a member of the Fourth District Dental Society, the Mississippi Dental Association, and the American Dental Association. He also held membership in the Southern Endodontic Society and the American Association of Endodontics. He enjoyed the outdoors at his farm in Hazelhurst, Mississippi, fishing and hunting. He was a loving husband, father and granddaddy affectionately known as "Daddy Joe" to his granddaughters. He survived by his wife, Elizabeth Adams Collins, of 50 years. Daughter, Mary Helen Brown (Roger), Nashville, Tennessee Son, Guyton J. "Guy" Collins (Karla Whitwer), Madison, Mississippi. Grandchildren, Daisy Reece Collins, Kendall and Courtney Brown. Sister, Sue Beth Fisher of Florida, Brother, James F. "Jimmy" Collins of Indiana, neices and nephews: Jeanne Allen (Charlie) of Florida, Joan Mummaw of Louisiana. Shane Collins of Georgia, Morgan Fields (Cody) of Indiana. Great neices and nephews: Isaac, Chiala, Michael, and Rachel. Great-great nephews: Jordan and Brantley, and many relatives and friends. Preceded in death by his parents and stepfather, Rex Andews. Arrangements: Visitation at Madison First Baptist Church, Wednesday, September 20, 2017 from 5 to 7 pm in the community room, and Thursday, September 21, 2017 from 9 to 10 am. with the Funeral Service following at 10:30 am. Interment will be 1:30 pm at the Marvin Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Kosciusko, Mississippi.
