Jeanne Comfort Black, 87, of Memphis, Tennessee, departed from this life and into the glorious presence of Jesus Christ on Saturday, January 10, 2015. Jeanne was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, on April 5, 1927, to Claude Whalen Comfort and Ruby Ratliff Comfort. She completed her high school education at Holmes Junior College where she was both a cheerleader and the President of her Senior class, and in the same year she was elected President of her Freshman college class. On May 18, 1946, Jeanne married Lenoir Black of Weir, Mississippi, and they both attended Mississippi State University. Jeanne was an active member of First Evangelical Church and a leader of Women's Bible Study Fellowship. She was an avid golfer and served as President of the Memphis Area Women's Golf Association. More than anything, Jeanne was devoted to her family. She was a loving wife and a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and beloved friend. She was predeceased by her infant son, Michael Grant Black in 1951 and by her seven brothers and sisters. Jeanne was survived by Lenoir Black, her husband of 68 years, for 31 hours. She is survived by her son, Stevan Lenoir Black, Sr. (Lynda) of Memphis and by her daughter, Sharon Comfort Black of Cambridge, Massachusetts; by her grandchildren, Stevan L. Black, Jr. (Jennifer) of West Point, Mississippi, Michael Bradford Black (Tracey) of Memphis, Shelby Christine Black of Memphis and Daniel Comfort Black of Memphis. She is also survived by one step-grandson and by six great-grandchildren. Our family mourns the loss of Mama Jeanne's love and devotion, and yet we celebrate her beautiful life. A private family funeral will be held at Marvin Chapel Church in Kosciusko, Mississippi, on Friday, January 16, 2015 followed by burial at Marvin Chapel Cemetery where Jeanne will be laid to rest next to her husband Lenoir and their infant son Michael Grant. At 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, 2015 a memorial service will be held at the Fellowship Hall at First Evangelical Church of Memphis. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to First Evangelical Church or to the Mississippi State Bulldog Club.
