Hilda Wasson Walton

August 21, 1922 — April 9, 2018

Hilda Orville Wasson McCandless Walton, 95, passed away Monday, April 9, 2018, after a short illness. Services will be Wednesday, April 11, 2018, at 10 a.m. at Jordan Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Parkway Cemetery in Kosciusko. Visitation will be held at 9 a.m. prior to the service. Following the burial, all friends and family are invited to celebrate Hilda's life with lunch at the Wasson Place, Hilda's dearest and favorite earthly location, where she grew up with her many brothers and sisters, all shaped and fashioned by their rich, Godly heritage. According to her mother, Hilda was born at Shady Grove on August 18, 1922; however, the doctor who arrived two days late for her delivery recorded her birthdate as August 21, 1922, a lifelong source of confusion. Her parents were Zachariah Alexander Wasson and Bessie Bridges Wade Wasson. She attended French Camp High School where she was named valedictorian. She furthered her education at Draughn's Business School and took her first job with General Electric in Memphis, TN. Here she met and married Milton Louis McCandless. Milton died in 1955 and left Hilda a young widow and mother of 10-year-old twins, Joseph D McCandless and William R McCandless and a 6-year-old daughter Deborah Susan McCandless. After becoming a widow, she moved her family to Kosciusko where they made their home with her mother, Bessie Wasson, and Hilda worked at the Attala National Bank for the next 10 years. In 1965, she married Joseph Douglas Walton and became stepmother to Karen, JoAnn, and Ronnie Walton. Hilda loved people and when Mr. Walton's job required that they move several times, it didn't take long for her to immerse herself into the community and make dear, new friends in each location. She loved hard work (outside the home, of course) and her personality, big heart, and love of people proved to be a great combination for success in sales. While in south Texas, Hilda obtained her real estate license and became quite successful as a real estate agent. When they retired to Hammond, La, Hilda became a top producer and district manager for World Book Encyclopedia. Eventually Doug and Hilda made Kosciusko their final retirement home. In Kosciusko, Hilda was a member of the Kosciusko Church of Christ and later returned to the First United Methodist Church where she enjoyed women's Bible studies. She also enjoyed being active in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Hilda was preceded in death by both of her husbands, her parents, Zachariah Alexander Wasson and Bessie Bridges Wade Wasson; and 12 of her 15 siblings including her brothers, James Lovick Wasson, Carrol Wade Wasson, Billie Eugene Wasson, David Edmund Wasson, Percy Alexander Wasson, Resa Elijah Wasson, Newton Ocran Wasson, Locket Alton Wasson, Zachariah Bailey Wasson, and sisters, Lynda Zach Wasson Ollerton, Myriam Aline Wasson Elkin, and Mary Wilma Wasson Forrester. She is survived by two of her sixteen siblings, Timothy Carey Wasson (Tommie) of Kosciusko and Opal Bessie Wasson Burleson of Millbrae, California, as well as her sisters-in-law, Sally Wasson and Barbara Wasson. Also proceeding her in death was her stepson, Ronnie Walton; son-in-law, Rick Boutwell; and granddaughter, Angelle Boutwell. Survivors include her children, Joe McCandless, Bill McCandless, Susan Andrews (Mike), Karen Logan, and JoAnn Boutwell, grandchildren, Sutton McRae, Walt Logan, Lt. Colonel (Ret) Mori Andrews, Ashley Hartman (Dan), Cile Adams, Joy Deitrich, Megan and Jimmy, seven great grandchildren, and many special nieces and nephews. Memorials may be sent to Hospice Ministries, Broadmeadow United Methodist Church, or a favorite charity. Online condolences can be made at jordanfuneralhome.com.
