Major George A. Sowell (USAF Ret.), 84, went to be with Jesus on April 24, 2016, of complications from Alzheimer's. George was born in Kosciusko, MS, and married his childhood sweetheart, Katherine Flint. He graduated from Mississippi State University with a commission into the United States Air Force, in which he served for 20 years. As a navigator he flew the RC121, and had a remote tour off the coast of Alaska, after which he went into tankers flying the KC97. He served as a Minute Man Missile crew commander in North Dakota. In 1970 he served as an infrared sensor operator in the Vietnam War. He completed his career at Hurlburt Field, Florida, where he had been an instructor in gunships. After retirement he went to Southwestern Seminary where he received a Master's Degree in Religious Education. He then served in churches in Texas, Louisiana, Illinois, and Alabama before retirement. He was a loving husband and father, who loved God foremost and also his country. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mildred Sowell; two sisters, Martha Utley, and Joyce Sowell. Those surviving him are his wife, of 60 years, Kathy; his children, Michael, Jonathan, and Judy, all of Madison; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth (Jon) Henneke; and two great-grandsons, Nathan and Liam, all of Daphne, AL. George also leaves behind many nieces and nephews whom he loved very much.
