Emmitt W. Simmons, 77, of Ethel, Mississippi passed away September 21, 2023, at his residence surrounded by his family. Visitation is 8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 23, 2023, at Jordan Funeral Home. Graveside service is at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, September 23, 2023, at Marvin Chapel Cemetery. Rev. Dewitt Bain and Rev. Matt Steed will officiate.

Emmitt was born June 18, 1946, to Woodrow Booth Simmons and Dorothy (Rachel) Simmons in Kosciusko, Mississippi. He was a member of Ethel Baptist Church. Emmitt grew up roaming the land around the family home, hunting and fishing and learning the mechanic trade from his dad.

He married Linda Adcock on June 5, 1965. They started their life together and soon had their first child, a daughter, Tammy Renee. A few years later a second daughter, Angela Gail. joined the family and 10 years later their final child, a son, Jason Woodrow joined the force.

To support his family, Emmitt worked hard as a very skilled mechanic. He began his career working with Louie Hollingsworth’s dealership, then Atwood Pontiac in Kosciusko, then later for Bill Jones Motors, and ended his career working for himself in a shop built with his own hands next to his home. Emmitt Simmons was known as “the best mechanic in Attala and surrounding counties”. People reached out from all over the state for his knowledge and skills. The man could fix anything. Especially in the eyes of his children.

Health issues ended his career as a mechanic. This gave him time to enjoy his “place”. He would spend hours clearing roads and bush hogging fields. He was always tinkering with some piece of equipment or machinery. In his younger years, before joint and back issues, he loved to deer hunt, go trout lining on the Big Black and travel with Mrs. Linda.

His son and sons-in-law looked up to him for guidance and leadership. His girls sought advice from him on many topics and if they had a problem with their car, with a household appliance, etc. they would call on daddy before their own husbands. He could usually help them with whatever they needed.

Emmitt LOVED Mrs. Linda. He would go to the ends of the Earth for her. He showed unconditional love in the 58 years they were married. Through the way he loved his wife, he taught his children the meaning of what a marriage was supposed to be like and how to love, even when life was hard.

In 1989, Emmitt earned the title of PopPaw, when his first grandchild was born. This child was followed by three more and three step grandchildren. He was also blessed with one great grandson and three step great- grandchildren. He loved carrying the title of PopPaw. It was one he carried proudly.

Though he will be missed greatly by his family and friends, they all know he is now in the arms of Jesus and the pain and suffering he has dealt with for so many years is now gone, and he has a new body.

Emmitt is survived by his wife Linda Adcock Simmons of Ethel, Mississippi; son Jason W. Simmons of Ethel, Mississippi; daughters Tammy (Gene) Irving of Ethel, Mississippi and Angie (Jeff) Kleckley of Suwanee, Georgia; sister Elizabeth Faye (Ralph) Miller of Ethel, Mississippi; grandchildren Nicole (Travis) Quesnot, Bethanie (Dalton) Cromwell, Morgan and Alex Kleckley; step-grandchildren Jennifer (Sam) Burge, Anna Dufresne, and Stefanie (Griffin) Pickle; great-grandson Mason Cromwell, and step great-grandchildren Alana, Jeremiah, and Kaylee Burge; two nephews and three great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Woodrow and Dorothy Simmons, In-laws Purvis and Edith Cummins.

Serving as pallbearers are Gwyn Miller, Sherman Miller, Hayden Miller, Bryce Miller, Logan Miller, and Rickey Mayo.
