Bettie Prewitt Burchfield, daughter of the late Charles F. Prewitt and Mozelle Worrell Prewitt, passed from her earthly life on December 9th in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Bettie was a long-time resident of Attala County but lived her last years near her daughters in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 13th at 11:00 a.m. at Jordan Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Parkway Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:30 – 10:45 a.m. prior to the service. Bettie graduated from Ethel High School as salutatorian of the Class of 1952. Immediately afterward, she entered the working world as a telephone operator for South Central Bell and later worked at several other businesses in Kosciusko in secretarial/clerical positions. She retired as a licensed insurance agent at the firm of England & Ferguson. While working and raising her busy family of four girls, Bettie was active in the Samuel Hammond Chapter of the DAR, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Business & Professional Women’s Club, as well as leading the first-grade Sunday School Department at First Baptist Church for over twenty years. For many years Bettie honed her skills as a seamstress, sewing fashions of the 60s through the 80s on her treasured Singer sewing machine and turning out pants suits, party dresses, etc. for her daughters with swift and admirable results. She became an avid and accomplished quilter as she faced the “empty nest” stage and won numerous blue ribbons and awards for her beautiful, intricate appliqué designs. Ever a lover of books and self-improvement, Bettie began college late in life, taking classes offered by Wood Community College and finally mastering college algebra after multiple courageous attempts. Bettie was married to Charles Edward Burchfield for 64 years, until they were parted by his death in 2016. She is survived by her daughters Libby Hewitt (Charlie), Amy Owen (Martin), Jane Bates (Curtis), and Sally Doty (Pat Nelson). She is survived by eight grandchildren: Casey Knauf; Emily Anderson, Evan Owen, Austin Owen, Josh Battles, Ellen Gratwick, Sarah Doty, and Ben Doty; and has now been reunited with her beautiful granddaughter, Lauren Naddy. Bettie was the proud great-grandmother of twelve.
