Bernice Carter

August 8, 1930 — September 17, 2021

Bernice Middlebrook Carter went home to be with her Lord and Savior on September 17, 2021. She was born in Ethel, MS on August 8, 1930 to James H. and Epha (Barton) Middlebrook. Bernice was a 1948 graduate of Ethel High School. She married Edgar Wiley Carter, Jr. in 1950 and they were married for 47 years. Ed and Bernice lived in Kosciusko, MS, where Bernice was the secretary at First Baptist Church of Kosciusko. They made moves to Middlesboro, KY and Marion, OH before settling in Indianapolis, IN. Bernice was a dedicated wife and mother. She was a fabulous southern cook, and there was no task that she would not take on. She cut down trees, shoveled snow, did woodwork, sewed, and did whatever was needed to care for her family. When her children were older, Bernice went to work full time at Howard Sams Publishing Company where she remained until her retirement in 1997. Bernice was also a dedicated Sunday School teacher for over 50 years at Northside Baptist Church. She is survived by her sons, Edgar W. Carter lll (Brenda) and Wesley Brooks Carter, daughter, Laura Zoe Carter Forbes (Kevin), four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers, Ralph Middlebrook (Paula), James H. Middlebrook, Jr. (Linda), Ronny Middlebrook (Nancy), sister, Denice Nollner (Bob) and sister-in-law, Hope C. Ellis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Wiley Carter, Jr. and parents, James H. Middlebrook and Epha Barton Middlebrook. The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 21, 2021 from 3:00-5:00 PM at Flanner Buchanan - Broad Ripple, 1305 Broad Ripple Avenue in Indianapolis; Additionally on Thursday, September 23, 2021 from 1:00-2:00 PM at Jordan Funeral Home 855 MS-12, Kosciusko, MS, where a funeral service will be held in the chapel immediately after visitation with burial following at Parkway Cemetery in Kosciusko.
