Sidney Eugene “Papa Gene” Edwards
Born October 24, 1941, in Carter, MS
On May 20, 2023, our precious husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather left us to go on his journey to his heavenly home with Jesus.
“Papa Gene” was a veteran of the United States Air Force and enjoyed talking with family and friends about his service in that branch of the Armed forces. He was proud to have served.
He was a respected and loved member of Crossroads Baptist Church in Pelahatchie, Mississippi where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, Music director and Lay preacher prior to moving to Leake County.
“Papa Gene” was a chemical engineer and worked at both St. Dominics Hospital and Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi until his health began failing.
He loved the outdoors, hunting, collecting guns, knives, and belt buckles were only a short list of his hobbies. He also enjoyed collecting and playing guitars until his health began to decline and he was forced to use oxygen 24/7 and a power chair for transportation.
“Papa Gene” was preceded in death by his parents Yance Cole and Ola Clyte Druey Edwards, sisters Mildred Emerald and Naomi Tall and Brothers Ernest, Clyde, and Roger Edwards, and a son Jeffrey Wayne Edwards.
“Papa Gene” is survived by his wife “Mark” Edwards; sisters Wanda (Ken) Black and Polly (Vern) Enyeart; brother Perry (Dot) Edwards; son Steve Farrell; daughters Sondra (Jimmie) Anthony, and Janiece Edwards; 4 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and very special God sons Frank and Adam Fortenberry of Jennings, Oklahoma; host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
